Mon, 09 May 2011 10:50:00 -0700 Czech GLOBE Games 2011 http://globealumni.posterous.com/czech-globe-games-2011 http://globealumni.posterous.com/czech-globe-games-2011

The yearly meeting of GLOBE community called Czech GLOBE Games was held during 5th till 8th May in wonderful town Vsetin in the east part of Moravia. The main organisers of the gathering were the local basic school Vsetin-Rokytnice and the association TEREZA (the provider of the GLOBE program in the Czech Republic). The GLOBE alumni community was of course at the place even if it was the lowest number of GLOBE alumni since the Czech GLOBE Veterans association was established in 2005. But it wasn't only Czech GLOBE alumni who attended the meeting the Estonian team who also took part at the GLOBE Games 2011 was lead by Laura Atlin the Estoninan GLOBE Alumni coordinator and the GLOBE alumni representative of Europe and Eurasia with the help of Kristjan Pahk, Estonian GLOBE alumnus. Together with Tomas Tunkl, the head of Czech GLOBE Veterans association and GLOBE alumni representative for Europe and Eurasia the GLOBE Games became the international GLOBE alumni meeting and great opportunity to clear the plans for GLOBE alumni activities in Europe in the coming second half of the year 2011.

Closer look at the programme:

On Thursday evening the GLOBE Games were successfully opened at the cultural club. By the opening ceremony was present Marek Štrokay the member of Czech GLOBE Veterans and Estonians - Laura Atlin and Kristjan Pahk. After the short introduction of all GLOBE student teams coming from 29 schools and 3 teams from Estonia, Poland and Slovakia and a cultural performances the GLOBE Games officially began.

There was a terrain game on Friday situated near the village Hovězí (Beef). During the game the teams of six students from 3 different schools completed tasks at various standpoints operated by the experts and scientists. The tasks were of the various topics close to GLOBE programme and environmental education. One of the standpoints was co organized by the Czech GLOBE Veterans. After the game during the evening the students could either watch cartoon movie at the local cinema or go party at concert of the local band called Wattak. The GLOBE teachers spent evening at the garden party close to the school and GLOBE alumni went to see the ice hockey match between Czech and Slovak team at the World Championship at the local pub.

The Saturday was devoted to GLOBE students' conference where the GLOBE students presented their research projects executed during the last year. The projects were presented in front of the expert commissions which after the presentation provided the teams with the feedback and advices both on the presentation skills and the research itself. The presentations needed a technical support and that was the place were the GLOBE alumni helped. After the conference the official "rolling of the Globe" took place from the main square till the park where the programme followed by the GLOBE festival. The rolling was assisted by the folk dancers and folk band. The GLOBE festival is an afternoon party for the wider public. Local people could get to know the GLOBE programe, experience it at the standpoints organized by the GLOBE schools and enjoy the performance at the main stage where the local bands, dancers and artists played. The afternoon was closed by the giving presents to all of the GLOBE teams and organisers, closing word and discovering where will the next GLOBE Games take place - Litomysl! During the evening the GLOBE students had the garden party, GLOBE teachers meeting at the local restaurant same as the GLOBE alumni. The discussion and cultural exchange between Czech GLOBE alumni and Estonian GLOBE alumni was so entertaining that it lasted till the morning hours.

Some of the teams could enjoy the supplementary programme on Sunday morning. The other teams left the place of GLOBE Games because of the long journeys back to the their home towns and cities.

Final word:

GLOBE Games 2011 was a very successful meeting and well organized by local school and TEREZA association. Also the weather during the event was very well pre-ordered. GLOBE alumni was trying to advertise the GLOBE alumni community and attract new members trough the posters, discussions and articles in the GLOBE Games Newsletter written by GLOBE student team under the expert lead. "We are looking forward to the GLOBE Games 2012 in Litomysl and we hope they will successful as the GLOBE Games 2011 were."

GLOBE Alumni,

It is with a heavy heart that the GLOBE Community wanted to share with us the loss of one of it's founding members, Professor Maria Del Carmen Galloni, Country Coordinator for Argentina and the GIAC Representative for Latin America and the Caribbean Region. Maria del Carmen passed away peacefully last Friday and had lived a long, healthy life.

As many of you know, she provided much needed support for the Alumni efforts both in the LAC Region as well as Internationally. Well before the alumni came into the picture, she was referred to by many as a “Legend” at GLOBE, Maria del Carmen helped to establish the vision of the program in 1994. In fact, her perseverance strengthened and formed many of the strong ties and collaborations built throughout the Program that we have today.

Maria del Carmen attended and facilitated GLOBE workshops and events around the world and she never missed any GLOBE Annual meetings until this year. Many of the founding Alumni members have seen her from GLOBE Meetings to GLE's and she has always been a familiar, and friendly face to see. On a more alumni level, Maria del Carmen was the grandmother of Founding Alumni Member for the LAC Region, Guillermo Grimaux, and our hearts and thoughts go out to him and his family!

Please keep Guille and his family in your prayers!

As many have you all have seen there has been a lot of activity on GS-Pals between San Ignacio and Innoko River School's as they have just paired up on their Migratory Bird Study. They had commenced it with a Video Conference between the to schools on 13 October to get to know one another and discuss the project.  Check out the videos below or the Migratory Bird Document created for the Project here.  Also, GS-Pal Team member and Alumni, Juan-Diego wrote up an excellent summary of the conference.

"Monitoring Migratory Birds as Climate Bio-indicators "

GS-Pals

Innoko River school

San Ignacio de Recalde

On the frame of the project  "Monitoring Migratory Birds as Climate Bio-indicators ", Wednesday October the 13, it was developed the first video-conference between the two schools: Innoko River school from Fairbanks-Alaska-USA and the San Ignacio de Recalde from Lima-Perú, with the finality of promote the exchange of information about migratory birds, from the polar zones to our country, which will allow our students to establish migration patterns related with temperature, as well as promoting the exchange of information and culture between both countries.

This process happened because of the great effort of all the teachers and students that were involved in the project in both schools, assessed by the representatives from the international Red of GLOBE  Alumni and the coordination of the GLOBE Program Perú, whose headquarters are in the environmental government  department. The project will have a duration of at least one year, without considering the vacation period in both countries.

The agenda of the video-conference was the following:

  1. Introducing participants countries, schools, teachers and students.
  2. Presentation of the study zone: Biotic and Abiotic characteristics.
  3. Exchange of questions about the biological diversity, putting emphasis on the relationship between the presence of migratory birds and other birds registered in the zone, with temperature.
  4. Dialogue about the environmental issues, in a Global order.

Before the event, the students from 9 grade of the San Ignacio de Recalde schools, did some study-fields visits to the Rimac river basin and to the Villa Marshes- watersheds to:

  1. Take environmental data  from each of the observation points.
  2. Infer the relationships between the temperature and the presence of migratory birds.

After taking the data of the biotic and abiotic factors in both zones, they met several times in the schools facilities to analyze the data that they had picked up, reviewing the  bibliographic information about the time of migration of the migratory birds that are studied, been aware of the weather and the  impact of men-activities from the surrounding  during the years  on the birds.

The objective of this event, was to promote reflexion spaces that allow the students to propose solutions to a problem that is a  global-awareness, as they are all environmental issues.

The video-conference was very wealth producing experience for the students, because without no doubt they experienced different realities, points of view, that of course must be respected.

The participants of the San Ignacio de Recalde de Lima-Perú are the teachers: Ruth Vargo, Armando Arana, Patricia Loo and the students  Sophia Herencia, Renzo Rodríguez, Junior  Vilca, María Katia Montes, Pilar Mendoza, Wen Yi Wang, Steve García, Luís Felipe Gutiérrez, Jerko Pavletich y  Rafael Yamamoto, of 9 grade of secondary.

Hello again GLOBE Alum!

Today was another exciting day at the partner meeting as the participants continued with the ESSP Workshop training.  The alumni sat in again with Seasons & Biomes to learn new activities to offer while training in SAB.

The Alumni presentation to the participants followed lunch and kicked off with a live video conference feed of GLOBE Alumni Estonia leading the 13th GLOBE Games and Expedition!  Represented there were 27 GLOBE Schools, 120 students, and 30 GLOBE Teachers.  It was great to hear from Estonian alumni Karli Kutt and Laura Altin and they received a tremendous round of applause from the audience on their work in Estonia!

Following Laura and Karli, JD and Matt were introduced and presented on behalf of the Alumni what was going on in our organization from history to future plans...it was all covered!  It began with a simple question asking the audience, "how many of you know what the GLOBE Alumni are?" and it ended with a much better understanding and even more potential for work of the alumni. A big congratulations to all of you and the work you have done over the years and continue to look forward to what we all have in store!

The rest of the afternoon was covered by the SCRC team including Dr. Donna Charlevoix, Mr. Eric Carpentar, and Mr. Gary Randolph of the GPO.  It was a great brainstorming session to allow partners and the other GLOBE Community member participants to give their thoughts and suggestions to how to fully enhance the SCRC experience.

Until tomorrow!

The 4th day of the annual meeting commenced with a discussion of how to make sense of field observations that were made from the previous days field studies and relating it to looking at climate.  The session was conducted by alumni coordinator Dr. Sheila Yule and other GPO staff member Mr. Martos Hoffman.  As an interactive/discussion based session, we used GLOBE's Model for Student Scientific Research(GMSSR) to investigate processes in hands--on learning.  Following this useful session, Mr. Michael O'Toole of the GPO and Dr. Lin Chambers(NASA, presented on ways to develop strategies to explore climate through long-term data sets.

The afternoon session was split up into 5 professional development training sessions on ESSP Projects.  Attending the Seasons and Biomes(SAB) session conducted by Dr. Elena Sparry and Mrs. Marth Kopplin, the Alumni explored how to utilize the GMSSR to make observations and formulate investigations on the activities associated with SAB.  It was highly productive and always informative.  SAB activities and participants have been a major component of GS-Pals and other Alumni run projects.

Until Tomorrow!

Hello GLOBE Alumni!

As with every GLOBE event, a hands-on, in your face, field study has to happen!! With four different sites selected for the participants to choose some, the Alumni were there to check it out!  The four sites included: Barrier Lake Station-university of Calgary Biogeoscience Institute, Fish Creek Provincial Park, Inglewood Bird Sanctuary and Center, and Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area. Matt was able to attend the Barrier Lake field study in Kananaskis Park, just outside of Banff and the Canadian Rockies. JD headed up to Inglewood Bird Sanctuary and Nature Center. Barrier Lake is within the lower subalpine ecoregion and contains a few different species such as lodgepole pine(lots of them) and Aspen.  Inglewood is located on the Bend River with a mix of riparian vegetation characteristics.  Best part about it is that it is in Calgary!

At both sites, they focused using GLOBE Protocol knowledge to map out a study site and record Unitems from Atmospheric and Land Cover topics.  Here are a few photos from the day!

Also, if haven't had a chance check out the Annual Partner Meeting Virtual website
